Now there was time for a little rest, something I especially looked forward to because I knew that the days of swimming in the Jadova were coming\u2014days of enjoying its shallow waters and making our way through the reeds where grebes and wild ducks hid.<\/p>\n
There were always plenty of people at Jasle. The village came alive during the summer. Sons and daughters and their children, just like us, would visit their parents, and even Jasle, the beautiful rocky bed of the Jadova, were too small to accommodate everyone who came there to cool off.<\/p>\n
At that time, besides fish, the Jadova was also full of crayfish. But what worried me most were the leeches, waiting for an opportunity to attach themselves to someone and enjoy a good feast of fresh young blood. I was careful not to let them get onto me, and I would swim across the river from one bank to the other in an attempt to evade them.<\/p>\n
I loved the Jadova and always tried to seize any opportunity to get there and explore its riverbed and banks. I could spend hours, alone or with company, walking into the half-dry riverbed, trying to catch fish trapped in shallow pools, searching for freshwater mussels and crayfish, and enjoying the mysterious sights of the rocky riverbed and the dark corners along the banks, overgrown with lush greenery.<\/p>\n
I was never particularly lucky, because that too is a skill one has to possess. But I knew who did have luck\u2014and who else but Dane and Perica, the grandsons of Makseta?<\/p>\n
Once, we went into the Jadova at a place where the water was no deeper than a metre, with huge rocks protruding from it. The sun had warmed the water, and the fish, fleeing the heat, hid beneath the rocks. The boys would catch them with their bare hands and toss them onto the bank where I was waiting.<\/p>\n
Now that was fishing!<\/p>\n
In barely an hour they caught some ten kilograms of fish, which we feasted on until long into the night.<\/p>\n
There was another kind of fishing on the Jadova as well. The older village boys would go to Luka Stolina, which, according to tradition, was named after one of my great-grandfathers, Stojan. Because of the depth of the water, the largest fish gathered there, while the Jadova rarely dried up in that section, and the dense shade made it especially attractive.<\/p>\n
They would fire their rifles into the water and sometimes return with a rich catch\u2014but in doing so they also unnecessarily destroyed a great deal of young fish.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
