In the mornings, I would sometimes go to the cooperative store to buy a few things for the household. The zadruga<\/em> was a shop located in the village community centre, the first room on the left after entering.<\/p>\n

There was almost always someone from the village there, having a beer and chatting with the shopkeeper, Mili\u0107\u2014a bony, thin man with sharp features, bristly, light-yellow hair, and prominent yellow moustaches. They would discuss village business and the latest events.<\/p>\n

I would walk in and say hello, feeling their curious eyes upon me, usually followed by the question:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhose boy is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBo\u017eelja’s grandson, Branko’s boy,\u201d Mili\u0107 would reply.<\/p>\n

I would proudly look at them, knowing that Grandpa was well respected in the village.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat have you come for?\u201d Mili\u0107 would ask.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve come for chicory, marmalade, salt, and one Voka<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the mention of Voka<\/em>, the villagers would exchange glances and burst out laughing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is a Voka? What kind of Voka?\u201d<\/p>\n

Seeing me in an awkward spot, Mili\u0107 would scold them:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you know, you devils! What are you snickering about?\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, turning to me, he would hand me what I had ordered and say:<\/p>\n

\u201cThere’ll be Voka<\/em> next time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Which meant that I might have to wait until the following summer before I could once again enjoy my favourite white coffee with a thick layer of cream made from the good varenika of Mirova, the cow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
