{"id":3544,"date":"2017-07-03T16:18:06","date_gmt":"2017-07-03T14:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/snckvrebac.hr\/?p=3544"},"modified":"2026-02-07T16:19:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-07T15:19:22","slug":"a-short-history-and-the-current-situation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/snckvrebac.hr\/en\/a-short-history-and-the-current-situation\/","title":{"rendered":"A short history and the current situation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vrebac<\/strong> is a small village near the town of Gospic, Croatia.<\/p>\n<p>Vrebac and its hamlets, <strong>Pavlovac, Zavo\u0111e and Seli\u0161te<\/strong> are located in the historical area called <strong>Lika<\/strong>. The average elevation of the settlements is about 600 meters.<\/p>\n<p>The oldest people who have inhabited Vrebac and Lika were the <strong>lapydes<\/strong>. One of their settlements was Stra\u017ebenica, a hill above Vrebac. The Roman name for Vrebac was <strong>Ancus<\/strong>. Vrebac was named during the rule of the <strong>Ottoman Empire<\/strong>, after <strong><em>Bey<\/em> Alaga Vrebo<\/strong>. In 1689, Vrebac was conquered by the Austrians, and became a part of the <strong>Habsburg Monarchy<\/strong>. It was settled by the <strong>Serbs<\/strong>. Vrebac was incorporated into the <strong>Military Frontier<\/strong>, and many men fought across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>In WWI, <strong>122<\/strong> volunteers from Vrebac fought on the Serbian side. During WWII, the village was attacked and burned several times; <strong>279<\/strong> people were killed during the war (135 partisans and 144 civilian victims). During the Croatian war operation the Storm in 1995, all the citizens from the village were banished.<\/p>\n<p>After the return of a small number of citizens, the renovation of the village began.
