Is This Possible?

This information has been prepared at the request of a group of citizens who are members of the Serbian national minority in Croatia, as well as members of the Serbian people who also hold Croatian citizenship and own real property within the territory of the Vrebac Local Committee, including members of the Serbian National Reading Room and Library in Vrebac.

………………………………….

Is it possible for a member of the Council of the Serbian National Minority of the City of Gospić to jeopardize the work of the Serbian National Reading Room and Library in Vrebac (hereinafter: SNČK)?

The association is registered in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Republic of Croatia, with its headquarters in Vrebac, in a building owned by the association, No. 30.

The SNČK makes a significant contribution to preserving and developing the Serbian national identity of the Serbian people and the Serbian national minority.

The success and quality of this contribution are demonstrated, as an encouraging example, by numerous articles and reports published across all types of media in Croatia and other countries.

The SNČK website is monitored around the clock, 24 hours a day, demonstrating the interest of members of our diaspora throughout the world.

Unfortunately, it is possible, and it has happened: the work of the SNČK has been jeopardized, as described at the beginning of this information.

At a meeting of local residents in Vrebac on August 1, 2026, held at the SNČK premises, the aforementioned Council member, together with some of those present, participated in raising tendentious, malicious and unfounded questions and presenting inaccurate information concerning the work of the SNČK’s governing bodies and members, as well as its ownership and usage rights.

The aforementioned improper conduct generated considerable interest among the local and wider public, thereby giving even greater weight to the damage caused to the reputation of the SNČK and its members and seriously jeopardizing its activities to date, as well as its present and future work.

When the SNČK website published an article on August 4, 2026, concerning the disputed meeting of August 1, 2026 (Meeting of the Local Committee with Residents), with further articles to follow, the website recorded a strikingly high number of views during the first few days: 1,436 on August 4 and 1,659 on August 5.

This information was prepared through joint consultations and following thorough and detailed verification of the events that took place at the disputed meeting. The meeting was attended by Nikola Popović and Milan Dragosavac, President and Secretary of the Management Board, respectively, with the latter also being one of the founders and those who revived the activities of the SNČK.

This information is being submitted to:

  • the Management Board of the Serbian National Reading Room and Library in Vrebac;
  • the Council of the Serbian National Minority of the City of Gospić;
  • the Mayor of Gospić;
  • the Council of the Serbian National Minority in Lika-Senj County;
  • Milan Uzelac, Deputy County Prefect;
  • the Serbian National Council in Zagreb; and
  • the Council for National Minorities of the Republic of Croatia in Zagreb.

We expect the above-mentioned authorities and bodies to take action within the scope of their respective competences. If any of them is not competent to act, we kindly ask that they forward our information to the competent authorities and bodies in the Republic of Croatia so that the aforementioned unlawful conduct by citizens may be appropriately sanctioned and prevented from occurring in the future.

On behalf of the group of citizens:

Mirjana (née Grubić) Ćurin

One of the founders and a member of the SNČK
